Define the target
Intelligence includes multiple abilities: reasoning, knowledge, working memory, processing speed and more. A person can also become “smarter” in practical ways by learning a field deeply, improving decision habits, building vocabulary, or becoming more accurate at a specific skill. Start by naming what you want to improve.
Learn actively, not passively
Reading and watching create familiarity, which can feel like mastery. Retrieval practice is harder and more useful: close the material and explain it from memory. Solve problems without looking at the example. Use spaced review instead of one long cram session. Feedback should be specific enough to correct the mistake.
Build knowledge that compounds
General reasoning does not operate in a vacuum. Experts often think faster because they recognize patterns from a large store of knowledge. Read books and high-quality explanations, take notes in your own words, and connect new ideas to what you already know. Consistency over months matters more than a weekend “brain hack.”
Protect the conditions for learning
Sleep helps consolidate memory. Exercise supports cardiovascular and brain health. A balanced diet and nicotine avoidance reduce avoidable friction. Social interaction and learning new skills can also be useful. The National Institute on Aging notes that staying active and learning new skills may support cognitive health, while avoiding guarantees that one activity prevents decline.
Be skeptical of transfer claims
Practice usually improves the practiced task. Getting better at a visual memory game does not automatically improve every kind of memory, and becoming faster at reaction clicks does not prove higher intelligence. A simple weekly system
Choose one subject and one skill. Study in focused blocks, retrieve information from memory, solve progressively harder problems, and review errors. Read widely enough to build context. Move most days and protect sleep. At the end of each week, produce something: an explanation, project, solved set or teaching note. Output reveals gaps that passive consumption hides.
